31796 Grove Ave – Mission, BC
(refer to the mapping section of this listing for the detailed location).
The property is located less than 4 km as the crow flies from Steelhead Falls at the Hayward Lake Reservoir.
The City of Mission is nestled on a southern coastal mountain slope, overlooking the lush valley of the mighty Fraser River. Founded in 1892, Mission, BC was originally inhabited by the Stó:lō First Nations people, and today this rapidly growing and dynamic centre is home to a population of some 38,000 residents.
Ideally situated, Mission is just a 15-minute drive from the US border, and approximately 70 kilometres east of the City of Vancouver. Mission is surrounded by the incredible beauty of mountainous vistas and natural forest settings. The climate is warm in the summer and mild and wet in the winter. Flowers bloom most of the year, as the area is naturally hospitable to a wide variety or plant life and vegetation. Topographically, Mission enjoys an immense variation of hillsides and gullies which maintain natural neighbourhood enclosures, spectacular views, and a sense of permanence.
Mission has a unique and colourful history. It is the site of Canada’s first train robbery, B.C.’s first rail link to the United States, one of the earliest Hydroelectric dams and Fraser River bridges, and is home to the oldest known First Nations’ archaeological site in British Columbia.
The municipality has an open and welcoming attitude to its citizens and businesses, new residents, investors and visitors alike. Come and see for yourself why Mission is “the Jewel in the Valley”.
The District of Mission is one of the few municipalities that manages its own forest resources. The Forestry Department maintains 13 recreation trails within the Municipal Forest for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. The forestry trails are signed at the trail head and marked throughout the route with orange reflective markers.
Stroll around Rolley Lake and listen to wild birds as you take in forests and marshland boardwalks. Swimming, fishing and canoeing are also great activities for this area. Allow approximately 1 hour for this predominately flat wilderness trail.
Linked to Stave Lake Reservoir, this BC Hydro owned property makes the ideal location for a family day out. Hiking, boating, fishing, swimming or relaxing by the beach are all on offer. Try the 18 km loop around Hayward Lake that includes floating bridges and a waterfall (check the BC Hydro site for partial closures and trail information).
After traveling through the naturally regenerated forest, the interpretive loop at Stave Dam Forest peaks with a lookout that on a clear day can see vistas as far away as Vancouver Island. Well worth the 45 minutes and uphill ascent.
Fraser River Heritage Park is located at one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the area overlooking the Fraser River. The park is located at the former site of St. Mary’s Mission for which the City of Mission is named.
Due to Mission’s mountainous terrain and expansive Municipal Forest, the community offers a number of mountain bike friendly trails. These trails are primarily located within three trail networks: Bear Mountain, Red Mountain, and Heritage Mountain.
Whether it’s the sandy beaches of Hayward Lake, the crystal clear canyon pools of Norrish, Lost, or Cascade Creeks, or the boat access shorelines of Stave Lake, Mission has many scenic destinations to canoe, kayak, paddle board, or just cool off at on a hot summers day.
The Fraser River offers no other angling opportunity quite as thrilling as fishing for a prehistoric monster—the White Sturgeon. Known as the Sturgeon Capital of the World, the Mission section of the Fraser has the largest population of sturgeon. The fish can be caught year-round, though spring and fall are the prime times. Anglers from around the world consider the Fraser River one of the top angling destinations for salmon. Approximately 60 per cent of all salmon in BC pass by Mission en-route to their home waters.
Mission’s history goes back to the first inhabitants of the region, the Sto:lo, or the People of the River. People travelling the Fraser River in huge cargo canoes met in the centre of the great river valley where the Sto:lo traded wind-dried salmon, fruits and other goods with clans from the coast and the interior of British Columbia.
In the mid-1880s, establishment of railway facilities further focused attention on Mission and facilitated a period of rapid urban growth which included the “Great Land Sale” of 1891. Mission’s considerable lake and forest resources also enabled establishment of hydro-electric operations and the creation of a prosperous logging industry.
The area from the Stave River to Hatzic Lake was first incorporated in 1892 as the Municipality of Mission. In 1922 the “Village of Mission” was incorporated, which became the “Town of Mission” in 1957. On November 3, 1969, the Town of Mission and the Municipality of Mission amalgamated to become the “District of Mission.”
Mission has retained its keen sense of history which is evident in the heritage buildings of its historic downtown core and hinterland. More recent additions to the historic mosaic include Westminster Abbey, Hatzic Rock and the Fraser River Heritage Park. Planned rejuvenation of the Fraser River Waterfront will ensure that history will continue to be an important part of Mission’s future.
Today, Mission is a growing community of over 38,000 residents nestled in the Coast Mountains beside the Fraser River, 70 km from downtown Vancouver. Residents enjoy Mission’s rich history and strong sense of community, while also retaining the benefit of ready access to the greater Vancouver area.
