Galena Shores is located in the Selkirk Mountains on the shores of beautiful Galena Bay on Upper Arrow Lake. The region is famous for high alpine peaks, amazingly hot and dry summers and lots of snow in winter. There are numerous natural attractions such as backcountry lakes, pristine creeks and rivers and hot springs—some as close as 15 minutes away. Everything from full service resorts to more natural back country pools are accessible by a short hike. Galena Bay itself is a small community of mainly recreational dwellings with a few full time residents. The nearby communities of Beaton (15 minutes) and Trout Lake (20 minutes) also have small populations of less than 50 year-round residents combined. This is an area to appreciate nature, wildlife and outdoor recreation. Revelstoke and Nakusp are the closest towns—Nakusp is 35-minutes away, Revelstoke a little further.
Slightly more accessible than Revelstoke is the community of Nakusp only 56 km away and not requiring a ferry for access. Nakusp has a population of 1,600 and offers all your basic amenities. The town has a 3,000 ft paved runway, great schools, a hospital, vet clinic, grocery store, golf course, quaint shops and many other services and a small but vibrant arts community. Nakusp also fronts on Upper Arrow Lake and has a great marina facility and attractive waterfront.
Revelstoke is a quaint mountain town located 65 km north of Galena Bay and connected to the same water body as Galena Shores. Coming from Alberta one turns off the Trans-Canada Highway at Revelstoke and then drives south on Highway 23 to the ferry. Revelstoke’s economy is based around tourism, forestry and the rail. The largest growth sector of late is tourism as more and more visitors come for outdoor adventures year-round. Revelstoke Mountain resort has the highest vertical drop in North America and some of the deepest and most consistent snow conditions on earth. With a population of close to 8,000 the town offers all the amenities one requires with two grocery stores, lots of shops, restaurants and cafes, all your professional services, spas, a great hospital with emergency service, two new schools and a picturesque and vibrant western style town core.
Upper Arrow Lake is part of the Arrow Lakes which are essentially two widening’s of the Columbia River made larger by the creation of the BC Hydro Reservoir after the construction of the Keenleyside Dam. Upper Arrow Lake extends over 100 km from above Revelstoke southward past Nakusp to the narrows near Arrow Park—Galena Bay is close to half way and located at the widest point of the Arrow Lakes. The water in Galena Bay is much calmer than the main lake. Lower Arrow Lake extends further south to the city of Castlegar.
In summer the boating on Arrow Lake is fabulous, there are lots of interesting excursions—up the long and fjord like Beaton Arm which extends more than 12 km off the main lake body, kayak along the shores of Galena Bay, visit historical sites such as the ghost town of Arrowhead, or just zip around the bay in a small aluminum boat stopping at various beaches and combing the shoreline for driftwood. Fishing is top notch year-round, but best in the fall/winter months with large rainbows 9-15 lbs. a common catch, dollies are also prevalent, the smaller Kokanee salmon. Extending immediately out of the private roads of Galena Shores are great quadding and dirt biking roads. For those who want to get into the backcountry even further, there are FSR roads that take you up amazing mountain valleys. Or for those who are looking for a scenic drive the drive south to Meadow Creek and Kaslo along Trout Lake and the Lardeau River is one of the best in BC. In late April/May the Gerhard rainbow are spawning at the end of Trout Lake (approx. 1 hour away) and these are the largest trout in the world—a must see! Other summer activities include wildlife watching, hiking, great mountain bike trails or just kick back and enjoy the stunning mountain and lake scenery.
In winter you have some BC’s best snowmobiling nearby, world class heli-skiing and a few backcountry adventure lodges are present in the area. Revelstoke Mountain Resort is approx. 1 hour away and offers amazing powder riding. Some of the best fishing of the year is during the winter months as the lake remains open water year-round. What better way to spend a snowy winter day than in a hot spring only minutes away.
The origin of the lake’s name (Arrow Lake) was a cultural feature known as Arrow Rock on the east shore of Lower Arrow Lake, about 35 km upstream from Castlegar. Here a large rock outcrop or overhang above the water was found, in the face of which was a hole filled with arrows. Different stories surround the meaning of the arrows, but commonly said to be shot there by the Lakes people (Sinixt) for good luck, either before or after war:
In the days before Columbus was born, the 'Indians' of the west and east Kootenay were at continual strife. It was customary for the west Kootenay Indians to winter along the southern Columbia and to ascend the stream every summer, to the lakes where hunting was good. As the tribes in the Slocan were always on the alert for war, they had their scouts out on the Arrow Lakes to note when their enemies came up the river. One summer the scouts returned from the [Arrow] Lakes with news that a particularly large force of warriors were going up the river. So the Slocan tribes prepared for war and crossed the mountains in force to Nakusp. On embarking from their canoes at Nakusp (the bay behind the long point) they noticed signs of a great storm having passed. On proceeding up the lake for some distance they came upon the force of the enemy. But alas there were none to resist them, for the great storm had apparently come suddenly upon them and there was nothing left but a heaving mass of canoe wreckage and dead bodies. The Slocan Indians took this as a great favor from the great 'Manatoo', and in token of respect they fired all their arrows at the high rock off which they lay, and wrote inscriptions on the face of the rock. Because of the vast wealth of arrow heads that fell to the bottom of the lake that day, the Indians named it Arrow Lake.
