Bonaparte Lake is located within the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, northeast of Kamloops. The lake is the largest on the Bonaparte Plateau—known for its cool temperatures even throughout summer, due to its depth. The entire region is known for its high-altitude wilderness, expansive outdoor activities, and economic activities—most importantly forestry and ranching.
Protected by BC Parks, Bonaparte Park is just south of the lake, sprawled on a mid-elevation plateau. The smaller lakes within the park have wild fish stocks and high wilderness recreation values for hiking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, hunting, and adventure tourism. There are unique geological features including the volcanic plug of Skoatl Point and Stockton Hill south of Bare Lake. Only very rustic camping sites exist, requiring self-sufficiency in this wilderness environment. The park also contains many trails and four fly-in fishing resorts.
Barriere is the closest town to replenish supplies and basic amenities. The City of Kamloops offers most urban retail and services including the Royal Inland Hospital and Kamloops Regional Airport.
The area has wild fish stocks (up to 12-pound rainbow trout in Boneparte Lake), and high wilderness recreation values for hiking, boating, canoeing, wildlife viewing, and adventure tourism. The entire region holds a popular draw for snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing enthusiasts.
Bonaparte Lake in British Columbia has a history rooted in First Nations presence, early ranching activities, and later development as a provincial park. The name ‘Bonaparte’ is believed to honor Napoleon Bonaparte, a figure admired by some First Nations in the region. The area was also used for ranching and fly-in tourism before becoming a protected wilderness area.
