    To reach Wells, drive east at Highway 26 (Barkerville Highway) for about 70 km. The entrance to Highway 26 is at the north end of Quesnel on Highway 97.

    Bowron Lake, which is a 30-minute drive from Wells, is the entrance to a world-renowned canoeing circuit.

    An active vibrant community in Wells is host to the popular annual August weekend music festival. As well, the local 1930's theatre has been restored and offers live entertainment.

    Nearby Barkerville offers tourists a trek back in time to the 1860s gold rush. Talented character actors dressed in 19th century costume offer world class entertainment from May to September. The prosperous tourist town has expanded its activities and now offers a winter venue.


    To date, historians recognize two previous gold rushes. The first placer gold rush led to a wildly successful claim staking frenzy in the late 1850s. Thousands of fortune hunters and entrepreneurs created the town which would later be named after one of the most well-known of the miners, Billy Barker.

    The second gold rush began in Wells during the early 1930s during the Depression. The rich gold-laced bedrock attracted visionary Fred Wells who created a full-service vibrant town providing employment for hundreds. Wells was one of the few towns in BC where work was abundant during the Depression years.

    Fred Wells’ lucrative Cariboo Gold Quartz mine grew the town’s population to over 4,000 during the 1940s.

    Today, the town reflects its beginnings in the heart of gold country. Many of the original buildings are being restored. The museum is housed in one of the original mining company buildings.

    Beginning in the 1990s, the easily accessible mountain town of Wells in central BC began again to emerge as both a tourism destination and, also, with new technology, the iconic town is yielding new discoveries over its expansive network of underground ore treasure.
