DL 4595 Elsie Holmes Road - Wynndel, BC
Wynndel is an unincorporated community in the Creston Valley of the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, sitting east of the Kootenay River along Highway 3A. It is about 11 kilometres north of Creston and roughly 80 kilometres southeast of Nelson. The community grew up around fruit growing, the local sawmill, and the railway, and today it supports a general store, post office, community hall, fire department, and a range of small and home-based businesses including farms, orchards, wineries, and distilleries.
From Creston, head north on Highway 3A for 9.6 kilometres, then slight right onto Elsie-Holmes Road. The property entrance is 300 metres ahead on your right.
Wynndel lies within the Regional District of Central Kootenay. The community has a population of roughly 650 and is served by Highway 3A, the main route linking Creston to Nelson along the east side of Kootenay Lake. High-speed internet reached the community in 2021. Services in the surrounding Creston Valley include schools, shopping, medical care, and the regional airport at Creston.
The Creston Valley and surrounding benchlands support a mix of mixed forest, with stands of conifer and deciduous trees typical of the West Kootenay, along with open grassy areas on the valley slopes. The fertile valley floor below has long been known for its orchards, berry farms, and grain crops.
The Creston Valley is a four-season recreation area. Kootenay Lake and the Kootenay River offer boating, fishing, and paddling, and the nearby Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is a renowned destination for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. The surrounding mountains provide hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, and backcountry access, with golf and skiing within reach in the wider region.
Wynndel was settled in the 1890s and rose to prominence in the early twentieth century as a strawberry growing centre, earning local grower O.J. Wigen the title of “strawberry king.” The arrival of the railway, the establishment of the Wynndel sawmill, and the dyking of the valley flats shaped the community through the decades that followed. The Lower Kootenay Band of the Ktunaxa Nation have occupied the region from time immemorial, harvesting, hunting, and camping on the Wynndel flats.
