    History

The Chip Lake and Wildwood region has a rich history rooted in Indigenous heritage, early settlement, agriculture, forestry, and railway development. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Woodland Cree, with the surrounding lakes, rivers, and forests providing important resources for hunting, fishing, and trade.

European settlement expanded in the early 1900s, particularly with the arrival of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1910. Wildwood, originally known as Junkins, developed as a farming and logging community and was officially renamed in 1929. The area was also home to one of Alberta's earliest Black pioneer settlements, established by African American families beginning in 1908.

Throughout the 20th century, agriculture, timber harvesting, and eventually oil and gas development helped shape the local economy. Cattle ranching, hay production, and mixed farming became established throughout the surrounding countryside, while Highway 16 strengthened transportation connections between Edmonton and western Alberta.

Today, the Chip Lake region retains its rural character, with a strong agricultural heritage, historic communities, and a landscape that continues to attract residents and recreational visitors seeking the natural beauty of west-central Alberta.
