Slocan Lake offers boating, swimming, kayaking and fishing right at your doorstep. Valhalla and Kokanee Glacier Provincial Parks provide some of the best backcountry scenery in the region, with trails and hikes all around. Winter brings excellent skiing and snowmobiling in the surrounding mountains, including nearby Whitewater Ski Resort, known for its legendary powder. Soak it all in at the various hot springs throughout the region, such as in Nakusp and Ainsworth. There are also several historic mining towns to explore in the area. The Slocan Valley truly has it all.
The Slocan Valley's history begins with a silver rush in the early 1890s, when rich ore discoveries near Sandon drew thousands of prospectors and gave the region its name, “The Silvery Slocan.'” New Denver was founded in 1892 by silver miners and reached its peak in the early 1900s before the boom ended by 1920, after which the town shifted to logging, farming and tourism. During the Second World War, New Denver became home to one of the largest Japanese Canadian internment camps in the valley, a history preserved today at the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre. Rosebery, just up the road, has its own smaller piece of this story, having once served as a steamboat landing and rail terminal on Slocan Lake.
