Located approximately 250 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, Lillooet is one of British Columbia's oldest communities and serves as the gateway between the Fraser Canyon, the South Cariboo and the Coast Mountains. Home to approximately 2,300 residents, the community is known for its rich Indigenous and Gold Rush history, spectacular scenery and relaxed rural lifestyle. Once known as Mile 0 of the historic Cariboo Wagon Road, Lillooet continues to be a service centre for the surrounding ranching and farming communities while attracting outdoor enthusiasts from across the province.
Just a few kilometres south of town, Fountain Valley is a productive agricultural valley stretching along Highway 99 and Fountain Valley Road. The area is characterized by open hay fields, cattle ranches, hobby farms and small acreages, offering residents a peaceful country lifestyle while remaining only minutes from the amenities of Lillooet. The fertile valley floor and abundant sunshine have made the area one of British Columbia's most productive growing regions, supporting everything from vegetables and fruit trees to vineyards, forage crops and livestock operations.
The region enjoys one of the warmest and driest climates in British Columbia. Summers are typically long, hot and sunny, with daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 30°C, while winters are relatively mild and considerably drier than many Interior communities. The combination of low annual precipitation, abundant sunshine and an extended growing season has earned Lillooet a reputation as one of the province's premier gardening and agricultural regions.
Surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, the area sits where the Fraser River carves through the Fraser Canyon, with the Bridge River joining the Fraser just north of town and Cayoosh Creek entering from the south. Fountain Valley lies between the rugged Coast Mountains to the west and the Fraser Plateau to the east, providing spectacular views and immediate access to thousands of hectares of Crown land.
Lillooet's economy has traditionally been built on ranching, agriculture, forestry, mining and transportation. Today, tourism has become an increasingly important contributor, with visitors drawn by the area's Gold Rush history, world-class fishing, river rafting, mountain biking, climbing, wineries and remarkable desert-like landscapes that are unlike anywhere else in British Columbia. Jade mining and gold prospecting also remain part of the area's identity, while local farms continue to produce an impressive variety of crops thanks to the favourable climate.
Despite its rural setting, Lillooet offers a full range of everyday amenities including grocery stores, restaurants, schools, medical services, banking, hardware stores, a hospital, and an impressive recreation centre featuring an indoor pool, arena, fitness facilities, library and community programs. Residents enjoy a welcoming small-town atmosphere where outdoor recreation, agriculture and community remain at the heart of everyday life, making the Fountain Valley area an exceptional place to live, recreate and enjoy the best of British Columbia's Interior.
