    From Vancouver

    Drive north on Highway 99 (the Sea to Sky Highway). You’ll follow the coastline past Howe Sound, go through Squamish, then continue into the mountains toward Whistler. Stay on Highway 99 through Whistler and keep heading north; after about 30 more minutes you’ll descend into the Pemberton Valley and arrive in Pemberton.

    The full trip from Vancouver is roughly 2.5 hours depending on traffic and weather.

    From Whistler, it’s a simple, 25- to 30-minute scenic drive north on Highway 99. The road passes Green Lake, climbs through mountain curves, then drops into the wide Pemberton Valley.

    Pemberton is a small village in the Sea to Sky Country of British Columbia, located about 33 km north of Whistler and roughly 158 km north of Vancouver. It sits in a scenic valley surrounded by mountains, lakes, rivers and farmland. The region is known for its warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, a climate that promotes both agriculture and outdoor recreation.

    Nearby Whistler is a much larger resort town known worldwide for outdoor recreation, particularly skiing and mountain biking. Its pedestrian village, ski hills, and resort culture have made it one of North America’s most recognized mountain resort destinations. Whistler became especially prominent after hosting many of the alpine events for the 2010 Winter Olympics.     Pemberton’s fertile mountain valley is surrounded by the Coast Mountains. The valley has rich agricultural soils that support hay fields, potato farms, berry crops, and pastureland, giving the area a mix of open farmland and riparian greenery along the Lillooet River.

    Surrounding lower slopes are dominated by temperate rainforest, typical of coastal British Columbia, including western red cedar, Douglas fir, western hemlock, and Sitka spruce.

    At higher elevations, forests transition to subalpine vegetation with lodgepole pine, mountain hemlock, and alpine meadows filled with wildflowers in summer.

    Recreation

    Pemberton is known for its laid back mountain lifestyle and wide open valley terrain that makes it a mecca for outdoor recreation. Ski touring and backcountry skiing are extremely popular in winter. Snowmobiling and cross country trails draw winter riders and Nordic skiers.

    In warmer months, the area shifts to mountain biking, trail running, and hiking, with an extensive network of valley and forest trails connecting scenic viewpoints and river areas. Standout natural spots include the turquoise alpine scenery of Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, the riverside walking trails and waterfall views at Nairn Falls Provincial Park, and paddling, swimming, and lakeside trails at One Mile Lake. Horseback riding, fishing along the Lillooet River, and scenic gravel riding through farmland also shape Pemberton’s recreation scene, giving it a quieter, nature immersed feel compared to resort towns.

    History

    In the 1800s the area was part of the traditional territory of the Lilʼwat First Nation. European settlement began with activity around the Fraser Gold Rush in 1858 and grew slowly until the arrival of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway in 1915, which connected the valley to mills, markets, and other towns. Agriculture, especially potato farming and other crops suited to the fertile valley soil, became an important part of the local economy, and in recent decades tourism and agri tourism have also expanded. Today Pemberton retains a small town, outdoor oriented vibe with a strong community feel rooted in nature and farming.
