    Access

    To reach Wells, drive east at Highway 26 (Barkerville Highway) for about 74 km. The entrance to Highway 26 is at the north end of Quesnel on Highway 97. The property is on the south side of Highway 26 in Wells and 5 minutes before reaching Barkerville.

    From Quesnel, Highway 26 travels eastward to Wells (74 km), Barkerville, and Bowron Lakes. Nearby Quesnel Regional Airport is serviced by Central Mountain Air. Prince George, an international airport, serves residents and communities of Northern BC, and guests worldwide. Public transport busses provide service to Wells from Quesnel every Thursday.

    Wells

    At the foot of the Cariboo Mountain foothills, Wells is known as the gateway to Barkerville Historic Town, the Bowron Chain of Lakes, and the Gold Rush Trail. At 1,200 metres, the mountain air is clean and crisp.

    Between May and September, Wells sees thousands of tourists pass through on their way to Barkerville and Bowron Lake. Most visitors stay or camp overnight in Wells, which has a vibrant art and outdoor adventure life of its own. Visitors come for the world class cross-country ski trails, snowmobiling, and artistic and study retreats during the winter months. During the summer, visitors enjoy galleries and live performances with a gateway to exploration and discovery.

    The Wells-Barkerville Community Forest was approved and granted in 2014. The forest covers approximately 4,300 hectares to the north. On the edge of town, the WBCF contains some of the area's recreation trails, forms part of the town's view scape, and is a popular non-timber forest product harvesting area.

    Wells' services include an elementary school, a library, the theatre, a volunteer fire brigade, RCMP detachment, primary care clinic, ambulance, retail outlets, restaurants, pubs, and a gas station. Many of the buildings have returned to their original glory. Of note, the 1930s theatre in Wells was refurbished and continues to feature live entertainment year-round.

    Barkerville

    Five minutes from Wells is the 19th-century gold rush-themed town of Barkerville. It is one of Canada's most famous historical sites and a popular tourist destination for local and international guests. The historic town is also a significant contributor to the Cariboo regional economy and has a unique regional identity component.

    As Barkerville's operating and managing partner, the Barkerville Heritage Trust works in conjunction with the Province of BC. This partnership ensures that Barkerville is efficiently managed, entertaining and educational to visitors, and financially stable as the premier heritage resource and tourism attraction for the Cariboo. The ultimate aim is to maintain and enhance Barkerville's position as a nationally significant heritage resource and tourism attraction.

    Many gold rush towns from the 1860s have long since disappeared, but Barkerville remains a thriving place, rich in history and full of life. Talented character actors dressed in 19th-century costumes provide world-class entertainment from May to September.

    Guests can visit the gold rush theatre, see a real Cornish Waterwheel in action, pan for gold, and dine at the well-preserved Chinatown.

    Bowron Lakes

    Bowron Lakes Provincial Park is "One of the Top 10 Canoeing Destinations in the World," as Outdoor Magazine voted. The Wells area has one of the largest and best maintained trail networks in all of BC. The park, 32 km east of Wells, provides one of the world's best canoeing opportunities and finest wildlife viewing. You can view bald eagles, osprey, moose, mink, beaver, bears, and a wide variety of birdlife from your canoe.

    The entire "Bowron Chain of Lakes" circuit is 116 km of lakes, rivers, and short portages. Typically the complete chain takes about a week. Shorter trips of the "west side" or Bowron Lake are options for those on tighter schedules.

    Recreation

    The Wells-Barkerville-Bowron Lakes area is a home base for adventure in the Cariboo.

    Summer

    In addition to the well-known Barkerville Historic Site and the world-famous Bowron Lake chain, Wells offers an extensive network of trails for hikers of all levels. There is also excellent mountain biking for cross-country riders or for riders looking to experience stunning alpine trails. The trail network includes double-track, single-track technical, and multi-use trails.

    With numerous lakes in the Wells-Barkerville-Bowron area, there are endless opportunities for canoeists and anglers. Jack O' Clubs Lake, located right outside the scenic mountain community of Wells, is a great spot to put in the canoe or fish for brook trout, bull trout, rainbow trout, and bullhead. Whether spinning, baitcasting, or fly fishing, chances of getting a bite are good.

    On the Bowron Lake Circuit, sport fish in the lakes and rivers are bull trout, kokanee, rainbow trout, and lake trout. It is wise to bring a variety of flies and lures. June and September have proven to be the best months for fishing.

    Winter

    Winter is a magical time in the Cariboo Mountains. It is not unusual to get over 20 feet of snowfall during a season. The Cornish Mountain Non-Motorized Trail Network includes 25 kilometres of groomed and ungroomed trails to cross-country/snowshoe. The network travels through an interesting wetland where moose, ptarmigan, and wintering swans are sometimes seen and then climbs the forested slopes of Cornish Mountain for fabulous views of the surrounding mountains.

    With all that fluffy snow, the powder hounds take to the mountains. There are several popular areas for backcountry skiing, telemarking, and snowboarding, including Mt. Agnes and Mt. Murray. The Cariboo Ski Touring Club operates huts in the Mt. Murray area, and both places are easily accessible for day trips from Wells and Barkerville.

    Troll Resort has an impressive vertical at 527 m hosting terrain from perfect beginner slopes and long fall-line groomers to steep gladed tree runs and a sizeable progressive terrain park with a recent terrain expansion.

    Snowmobiling on the many trails in the area is permitted. Using the designated corridor through the community, snowmobilers can gas up and reach their accommodation without loading up. Riding opportunities include hill climbing at Mt. Agnes, alpine riding at Bald Mountain or Yanks Peak, and trail touring from Prince George, Likely, or Quesnel.

    History

    Wells was built as a company town for Fred Wells' Gold Quartz Mine in the 1930s and once served as a major center of northern BC. This town was the only place in BC where one could find employment during the depression years. Fred poured his first gold brick in the early 1930s at his successful hard rock mining company at Cow mountain.

    In 1942 Wells had a greater population than Quesnel or Prince George. The closure of the gold and other mineral mines in 1967 took its toll on the town, and most of the population moved away. Striking it rich, though, might be more about the future than the past.

    Experts believe that most of the world's gold is still in the ground. During that era, Wells had two hockey teams, a golf course, a baseball team, a horse racetrack, and a world-renowned ski hill. The community hall hosted numerous events, from theatric plays to dances and badminton games. The town takes pride in its history, with many of the unique heritage buildings preserved and restored.

    Historians recognize two previous gold rushes. The first placer gold rush led to a wildly successful claim-staking frenzy in the late 1850s. Thousands of fortune hunters and entrepreneurs created the town named after one of the most well-known miners, Billy Barker.

    Wells, an easily accessible mountain town, began to emerge as a tourism destination in the 1990s. The iconic town is yielding discoveries over its expansive underground ore treasure network with the latest technology.
