    Leave the crowds behind and head to the Similkameen Valley via the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) through Manning Park and Princeton. You can feel the change in the air once past Princeton, and you can see the change in landscape from the coastal forest to the pine-dotted arid land with spectacular mountains on either side of the valley! The river is soothing and serene and helps to wash away the worries of daily city life. This area is sparsely populated, and encourages you to spend time with family and friends on the river!

    The valley has a reputation for its ideal climate for growing fruit, wineries and craft cider, like the nearby Okanagan Valley. The main difference is in the real estate prices, which remain more affordable than the over-heated Okanagan! This can be a factor for financing though, so having a larger down payment is important if you need a mortgage (50% or more).

    This rancher looks plain from the low-maintenance vinyl-sided exterior, but don’t be fooled, as the interior was completely remodelled and there’s nothing to do but stock the fridge and start the adventure!

    The 1.12 acre lot is wide open to the west of the house, where a 20 ft storage container sits with room for you to develop your own ideas. Next door is the Stemwinder Provincial Park and campground. This area is good for tenting, RVing, fishing, hiking, biking and riding quads in the spring, summer and fall, or sledding in the winter. If skiing is more your thing, then the Nickel Plate Nordic area is great for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. A little past Nickel Plate is Apex Mountain Resort, which just had the best snow of all the Okanagan ski areas this season, and usually finishes the season with a huge snow base that can take months to melt! They also have skating at Apex, and a village with restaurants and shops—less than 45 minutes from your front door!

    On Highway 3 about 2 minutes west of Hedley, or 20 minutes east of Princeton. When driving from either direction, look for signs for Stemwinder Provincial Park and Campground . . . the driveway sits about 400 m east of the campground entrance and slopes down to the house, which sits below the highway.

    Hedley is an unincorporated town in southern British Columbia, named after Robert R. Hedley, the manager of the Hall Smelter in Nelson. Hedley is located at the foot of Nickel Plate Mountain in the Similkameen. The town had a population of approximately 242 as of 2016. In the early 1900s, Hedley's population peaked over 1,000 people, primarily due to the gold mining industry. Hedley and surrounding areas are within the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen and the three words that best describe the area are Rugged, Rustic and Real.

    The 1987 Burt Reynolds film Malone was filmed in the town. Part of the film "The Pledge" Starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Sean Penn, was filmed in Hedley. The Mini TV series "The Andromeda Strain" was also filmed in Hedley B.C. Hedley was featured on the historical television series Gold Trails and Ghost Towns Season 3, Episode 10.

    Chuchuwayha 2, an Indian Reserve of the Upper Similkameen First Nation, is located in Hedley. Chuchuwayha 2C, another reserve of the same First Nation, is located a few kilometres southwest of Hedley at the head of Johns Creek.


    Five vegetation zones were recognized in the Similkameen Valley of southern British Columbia. These zones were largely controlled by elevation primarily as a reflection of climate. The climate becomes progressively more moist from east to west and with increasing elevation. Two habitat types were described in the Artemisia tridentata zone, three in the Pinus ponderosa zone, five in the Pseudotsuga menziesii zone, five in the Abies lasiocarpa zone, and one in the Alpine zone. Some habitat types correlated well with the soils at a great group level. The Pinus—Festuca habitat type was found mostly on Dark Gray soils, the Pseudotsuga—Festuca habitat type on a variety of soils, the Pseudotsuga—Calamagrostis habitat type on Gray Luvisols, the Festuca—Eriogonum habitat type on Black Chernozems, the Abies—Vaccinium—Calamagrostis habitat type on Dystric Brunisols, and the Abies—Vaccinium, Phyllodoce habitat type on Alpine Dytsric Brunisols soils.


    In the warm Similkameen Valley there are many hiking and biking trails from Princeton to Cathedral Lake Provincial Parks. Also numerous tenting and RV camping spots along the river from Princeton to Keremeos with plenty of spots to fly fish for trout. Floating down the river in an inner tube or canoe or kayak is very relaxing too.

    Quads are popular as there’s plenty of Crown land to explore and hunt on in season. Exploring Nickel Plate Mountain and the various mines or trails, and going up to the lake where you can fish as well.

    Stopping to sample the fruit at the numerous fruit stands around Keremeos or the wine or cider at wineries or cideries around Cawston is another popular activity.

    Winter is a great time to take to the great Canadian pastime of Nordic or alpine skiing or sledding in the backcountry with your snowmobile.


    The story of Hedley begins with the 1898 Gold Rush boom in the Similkameen Valley, where hundreds of men and women came in search of fortunes and a touch of luck. When one looks up to where the Nickel plate Mountain meets the sky, you can see wooden structures clinging precariously to the mountainside. The Mascot Mine is perched on Climax Bluff, and operated for over 100 years is now closed, but opens up from time to time for tours.
