DL 3259 Penny Road - Penny, BC
Travel approximately 16.5 km east of Prince George on the Yellowhead Highway 16 and turn left onto the Upper Fraser Road. Travel 63 km and turn left at Hansard, McGregor Road/Upper Fraser Road, and pass over a bridge. After the bridge, keep right and travel 48 km along the river, following the signs through Longworth and Sinclair Mill communities to Penny. The drive typically takes 2 hours. The previous owner had a handshake access agreement with two neighbours at the end of Penny Road to access the property, which may now be overgrown. Boat access reduces the travel time to one hour, however, it is dependent on weather/river conditions. Depending on the water level, there are sandy beaches along the river. There is a boat launch on the highway side of the river, greatly reducing the time to reach the property.
Within the Fraser-Fort George Region, Penny lies beside the CN railway and old sawmill town midway between Prince George and McBride. The Rocky Mountains flank the eastern side, and to the west is the northern end of the Cariboo Mountains, within the Robson Valley. Prince George is 2 hours to the northwest, while McBride is an hour's drive to the southeast.
Located on the Fraser River's northeast side, Penny provides access to a multitude of recreational activities. With a community hall and 11 permanent residents, the 40-plus houses are mainly absentee-owned and occupied seasonally.
The once-thriving community is now a quaint whistle-stop on the CN line and, for the most part, has returned to its beautiful natural state. The forest reclaimed the mill, and many homes which once stood are no longer visible. The post office is still in operation, with the train stopping to pick up and drop off mail and passengers three times a week. Penny is the only post office in Canada that still has mail delivered by train. The community hall still stands and is used by the community for gatherings.
The recreational qualities of this property are abundant. Opportunities to explore by off-road vehicles, horseback, wilderness hiking, and camping, along with fishing, and hunting for big and small game, are a strong attraction in and surrounding the land.
Red Mountain Cabin and Trail, a BC Recreation Site, is located in the mountains above Penny's community. In 1960-1962, the Penny township decided to build the cabin and completed it on October 2nd, 1962. The Prince George's Recreation Society extensively renovated the cabin’s exterior and interior in 2005. The roof is now peaked and metal-clad. This interior provides a cozy fireplace complete with stocked firewood. Kitchen utensils and plates, cookware, a gas three-burner stovetop, lighting, beds, and bedding for six persons, complete the comfortable cabin.
Getting to the cabin is nothing short of a spectacular 12.5 km hike, ski tour, or snowshoe trek through low-elevation regrowth forests following a fire in the early 1900s. The trail continues among old-growth cedars estimated to be more than 800 years old, spruce and subalpine fir stands. The cabin faces the breathtaking valley between Red and Green Mountain, and mountain peaks that seemingly stretch forever at the final destination. The wilderness showcases mountain caribou, moose, black and grizzly bears, and wolves.
Penny Spruce Mill was erected on stilts on the Fraser Riverbank in approximately 1916 when a postmaster was also assigned. Lumber was in high demand, and many communities along CN's east line flourished. The mill continued operation until the 1960s, and at its peak, Penny's population was 675. The Penny schoolhouse has closed and re-opened over the years, and in the 1980's it closed for good. During the same period, the Penny Salmon Hatchery was established. Following the mill's closure, the population has steadily declined to the present 11± full-time residents.
