    Area Data

    Clinton is a village in British Columbia, located approximately 40 km northwest of Cache Creek and 30 km south of 70 Mile House.

    It is considered by some to straddle the southern edge of the Cariboo country of British Columbia, although others consider Ashcroft-Cache Creek, Lillooet, Savona, Kamloops and even Lytton and Spences Bridge to be in the Cariboo. Clinton, however, does sit immediately below the southern edge of the Cariboo Plateau. Clinton has a number of attractions including horse-back riding, big game viewing, hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities.

    Every May, Clinton is home to the Annual Ball where many people dress as the first settlers did. The May rodeo and dance are held on the Victoria Day weekend. This is one of British Columbia's oldest continual events having first been held in 1867 and was a highlight of the social calendar in the British Columbia Interior for many decades. The Clinton Museum, built in 1892, has a number of historical artifacts on display that date back to the gold rush and founding of the area.

    Originally known as "47 Mile House" or "47 Mile," Clinton was named in 1863 upon completion of the Cariboo Wagon Road in the area for Henry Fiennes Pelham Clinton, the 5th Duke of Newcastle, who was colonial secretary from 1854-1854 and 1859-1864.

    During the Cariboo Gold Rush, Clinton was a busy junction on the wagon road to the gold fields of Barkerville. The location of the settlement made it an ideal resting place for weary travelers and miners enroute to make their fortunes.

    Once “Gold Fever” subsided, the ranching industry developed, some of the original ranches such as Maiden Creek Ranch, Mound Ranch and Pollard Ranch are still operational today.

    In the early 1950s forestry became the mainstay of the economy. At one time, over 20 bush mills and saw mills operated in the area. Consolidation in the 1970s led to only one operation surviving.

    Since the mid-1970s, the population of Clinton has remained stable and has slowly increased.

    Vegetation

    Clinton is located in the heart of cattle country. The surrounding countryside offers lush, open grass meadow and thick coniferous forest. River/creek bottoms are typically lined with deciduous trees. As you head west, towards the Fraser River, the climate becomes more arid with large grass expanses and thinning pockets of timber.

    The region surrounding the residence is famous for its outdoor recreational opportunities. The following activities are available:

    Hunting

    The property sits in Management Unit 3-31 offering hunting opportunities for whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, bear and game bird species. The ecosystem surrounding Clinton is very rich and healthy allowing large populations of wild animals to flourish.

    Snowmobiling

    Within a short commute, the ample annual snowfall and high altitudes to the west create some of the best snowmobiling opportunities around. There are infinite miles of trails/logging networks to explore.

    Cross-Country Skiing

    The same snow, which affords excellent snowmobiling opportunity provides excellent cross-country skiing conditions. This is a wonderful way to explore the peaceful countryside without the constant hum of an engine.

    Boating/Fishing

    Clinton is surrounded by lakes and fishing opportunities. The property is mere hours away from hundreds of different lakes including some very prestigious, trophy trout lakes and trout fishing resorts. The nearby Fraser River provides opportunity to fish for salmon and steelhead. Large lakes such as Loon Lake and Pavillion Lake may be accessed in under an hour.
