Elk Park Ranch:
The Elk Park Ranch development covers 4,300 acres, of which 3,500 have been allocated for 16 variously sized ranches. A working 600-acre ranch, called the Upper Ranch, which offers horse boarding and trail rides, borders the offered acreages. A community has been planned within a core 200 acres that will feature amenities including restaurants, boutique shops and accommodation. Around this core will be a mix of single-and multi-family homes. Yet, one is never further than a horseshoe’s toss from the history that permeates the area.

Across from the ranches at Elk Park is the Upper Ranch, a 600-acre working ranch that enlarges the community’s character and its engaging western lifestyle. Independently owned and operated, Upper Ranch boards horses and presents the opportunity for residents and guests to explore the rugged terrain while out on a leisurely trail ride.

Ranch amenities include The Barn – which is available to owners who wish to board their horses – and the Lost Moose Trails, a network of hiking, biking and walking that wind through the woodlands around Elk Park Ranch.

“If you want to have your horses and a few cattle, you can,” says Fred Schickedanz of Schickendanz West, developer of Elk Park Ranch. “Or you could simply build your dream home on it and enjoy the view of the Purcell Mountains, the lake, streams and all the amenities that British Columbia’s Columbia Valley offers – fishing, skiing, golf, mountain biking, hiking – all three hours from Calgary.”

Area Data:

Radium Hot Springs (Radium): Located on the "warm side of the Canadian Rockies", Radium is famous for its favourable climate, beautiful geography and recreational attractions. The village of Radium Hot Springs (only minutes away from these very special ranch properties) is British Columbia's best mountain & ranch getaway village with a unique blend of natural attractions and all the conveniences of a resort town: great dining, golfing, skiing, spas, natural hot spring pools, and the most beautiful alpine scenery you can imagine.

Population: 921

National Parks (Kootenay / Yoho / Banff): Elk Park Ranch backs onto the Kootenay National Park and is within an easy drive to two additional National Parks – Yoho and Banff which combined make up World Heritage Site; truly a unique location.

Columbia Valley: The Rocky Mountain Trench, known as the Columbia Valley, is surrounded by the BC Rocky Mountains on the east and the Bugaboos on the west. Both are impressively high and rugged ranges. The Columbia Valley cradles two of the more important rivers on the North American continent (1) the Columbia River and the Kootenay River. Here at the headwaters, they roll by untouched by man, unless you consider the dip of a kayak paddle, or the fly of the fisherman, to be touching. (2) The Kootenay River, which originates high in the Rocky Mountains in Kootenay National Park, is fed by dozens of creeks and several rivers as it rolls southward. The Columbia River, with its headwaters in Columbia Lake, rolls through the southern part of the valley northward for more than 200 kms before bending southward and heading west to the Pacific Ocean at Astoria in Oregon, 2,000 km from its source. The broad waterway is an important stopover on the semiannual migration route for wildlife and a joy to travel in any season.

Columbia Valley Wetlands: The Columbia Valley Wetlands cover an area from Canal Flats to Donald and many of the ranches in this development have magical views of these wetlands which are the longest continuous wetlands remaining on the continent. They cover 26,000 hectares (64,000 acres) and support over 260 resident and migratory bird species.

Recreation:

The East Kootenay region and in particular the area surrounding this ranch development enjoys some of the most desirable geographic characteristics supporting and endless array of recreational opportunities. Just some of the many such opportunities are listed below:

  • Hunting: Ten big game species are found within its 26,000 square kilometer area. The total big game population exceeds 100,000 animals yielding densities of approximately four animals per square kilometer.
  • Hot Springs: The actual Hot Spring Pools, operated by Parks Canada make an ideal soaking stop at the base of the Kootenay Mountain Range. The hot springs, open year round, are equipped with two pools: one heated, the other cooler for more athletic swimming & fed from four sources in the canyon of Sinclair Creek beneath the pools. Unlike some hot springs, these waters are free of odorous sulphur.
  • Golfing: Radium Hot Springs offers several superb golf courses in spectacular settings, including 3 9-hole courses and 2 18-hole courses. Within a short drive there are several more world class courses – this is a golfer’s paradise!
  • Skiing/Snowboarding: Radium is conveniently located within a short drive to both large scale / world renowned resorts such as Panorama or Kicking Horse Mountain and more family friendly Fairmont Hot Springs.
  • Rafting/Kayaking/ Canoeing: The Columbia River provides the ideal setting for leisurely trips down this historic and ecologically rich waterway. For the more adventurous there are class IV waters not far away.
  • Fishing: The abundance of streams and lakes in the East Kootenay support sport fishing and serve as important spawning and rearing areas for a variety of species. Dolly Varden, Rainbow, Cut-throat, Eastern Brook trout, Mountain Whitefish and Kokanee make up the majority of catches in the Kootenay River and its tributaries. In addition, many lakes are stocked with fish from the Provincial hatchery near Wardner.

History:

Elk Park Ranch: Settled in 1886, when 18-year-old James McKay bought 15,000 acres from the B.C. Government. The original farm house was floated down the Columbia River in 1901 has now been significantly upgraded and will be integrated into an Elk Park Ranch community facility.

Radium Hot Springs: Named for the odourless hot springs located just inside Kootenay National Park and only minutes away from these very special ranches. The name originated at the turn of the 20th century when the promoters tried to sell the hot springs as a therapeutic cure and used the springs very slight radioactivity as a selling point.

A group of Englishmen headed by Lord Northcote started construction of the first pool prior to 1914. Their efforts were halted by the outbreak of World War I. The Canadian government took over and the hot pool and the first log bathhouse were completed in 1923. An imposing park gateway was constructed close to the pool, and entrance fees for vehicles were collected. On the arch over this gate was the quotation "THE MOUNTAINS SHALL BRING PEACE TO THE PEOPLE". This development followed the construction of the original Banff-Windermere highway through the Park. Visitors came by train to Banff and were transported to Radium Hot Springs by bus or limousine over the narrow, dusty roads.

In 1948, the old bathhouse was destroyed by a fire and was replaced by a lovely new aquacourt, a new hot pool, and a swimming pool. At the time, the Village of Radium Hot Springs was rapidly growing, so this resulted in a great increase in traffic.

Today, Radium Hot Springs lures more than ¼ of a million visitors each year and the area has become a prime vacation, resort and retirement destination.
