Water Sports
The relatively large East Barriere Lake is great for water sports, cruising on a pontoon boat or relaxing on the many sandy beaches.

Fishing
Being a large lake the fish have lots of places to hide. Trolling is the main form of fishing, however fly fishing is successful at the many tributaries coming into the lake. The lake holds some good sized Dollies, Kokanee, Burbot, Whitefish, Bull and Rainbow trout. Other good fishing lakes are close by such as North Barriere that has a salmon run, South Barriere and Saskum lakes. The lakes district is not far away either.

Winter Activities
Many or the owners use their property year-round. The area has many trail systems used for snowmobiles accessing the Barriere routes and Dunn Peak. A maintained cross-country skiing facility is close by. Snow shoeing, ice skating and ice fishing are popular.

Area Data :

East Barriere Lake is a hidden gem. It is at 632 m in elevation so it enjoys the warm weather of the North Thompson. The lake is warm for swimming with surface temperatures reaching 27°C (80°F). The lake is also deep up to 100 m (328 ft) so fishing can still be good for the big ones in the summer. The lake has a surface area of 994 ha (2,456 acres) and is close the 13 km long.

There is a small government recreation site and a public boat launch at the west end of the lake. Several cabins and luxury homes are built at the west end, south side and the north side where Barriere Ridge Resort is located. Despite there being several properties developed the area is quiet and peaceful.

The town of Barriere has most services that a person would need. There is a school, shopping center, credit union, salon, liquor store, Timber Mart, several motels and restaurants. The town hosts the annual “Elvis” festival in July and the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo each September.

History :

The community derives its name Barriere (originally and alternately, Barrière) from the rocks/nets placed in the water by first nations people to act as fish traps, forming a barrier to boat passage on the river. The descendants of those placing the fish-trap barriers are from the Simpcw/Secwepemc Nation who still reside in present day Chu Chua, just north of Barriere.

Gold was discovered in the area as early as 1861 and was mined using the placer method. The August 12, 1861 edition of the British Colonist mentions "...one party of Frenchmen at a place above Kamloops called Barrier. They are fluming the Thompson, and expect to take out $25 per day to the hand.”
